Overview

Endodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry concerned with the dental pulp, the soft inner tissue of a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels, and with the tissues surrounding the tooth's roots. Its most familiar procedure is root canal treatment, performed when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, often causing significant pain. The treatment involves removing the diseased pulp, cleaning and shaping the root canal system, and sealing it to preserve the tooth and prevent further infection. Endodontics allows teeth that might otherwise be lost to be retained and restored to function. Research relevant to endodontic treatment includes case reports of complications such as a broken endodontic instrument causing nerve paraesthesia, surgical procedures such as flapless root resection of molar roots, and the relationship between systemic conditions and endodontic periapical lesions. These studies address the techniques, challenges, and outcomes encountered in treating the dental pulp and periapical tissues. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to endodontic treatment and the care of the dental pulp and root canal system.
