Overview

An implant-borne prosthesis is a dental restoration that is supported by dental implants placed in the jaw rather than by the natural teeth or surrounding soft tissue. In implant dentistry, titanium implants are positioned in the jawbone, where the surrounding bone fuses with them to form a stable anchor, and a prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, or overdenture is then attached to these implants. Implant-borne prostheses are used to replace missing teeth, restoring chewing function, speech, and appearance while providing a secure foundation that can improve the stability of the restoration. Research relevant to implant-borne prostheses includes work on two-implant mandibular overdentures and the clinical and laboratory procedures involved in their fabrication, as well as impression techniques for accurately recording the position of closely placed implants and the graft materials used to prepare implant sites. These studies address the planning, surgical preparation, and prosthetic procedures that support implant-retained restorations. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to implant-borne prostheses and the restoration of missing teeth using dental implants.
