Overview

Dental implants are biocompatible artificial tooth roots, typically made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support fixed or removable prostheses such as crowns, bridges, and overdentures, restoring function and appearance after tooth loss. Implant treatment relies on osseointegration, the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the implant surface, which provides the stability needed to bear occlusal loads. Successful therapy depends on adequate bone quantity and quality, careful surgical placement, and accurate prosthetic restoration; where bone is deficient, augmentation procedures such as sinus lifts and grafting with materials like hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, or titanium mesh may be used to create a suitable site. Implants also serve as skeletal anchorage in orthodontics, where mini-implants provide fixed points for tooth movement and for appliances used in conditions such as open bite. Important clinical themes include implant design and surface, immediate versus staged placement, impression and prosthetic techniques, management of complications, and the histologic assessment of integrated implants. Research published in this area reflects these topics, including corticobasal and immediate-placement protocols, bone augmentation and sinus-lift techniques, ridge reconstruction, implant-supported overdentures, orthodontic mini-implant anchorage, impression methods for closely placed implants, and histomorphometric evaluation of osseointegration.
