Overview
Maxillofacial implant surgery is the surgical placement of implants into the bones of the jaws and face to replace missing teeth or to support dental and facial prostheses. Its most common application is the dental implant, a biocompatible fixture, typically titanium, that is anchored in the alveolar bone where it integrates with surrounding bone through osseointegration to provide a stable foundation for crowns, bridges, or dentures, restoring chewing, speech, and appearance after tooth loss from trauma, decay, or periodontal disease. Successful treatment depends on adequate bone volume and quality and on precise three-dimensional planning of implant position relative to vital structures such as nerves and the maxillary sinus, for which imaging including cone-beam computed tomography is used to assess anatomy and guide placement. When bone is deficient, site preparation often requires augmentation procedures, such as sinus augmentation and ridge or maxillary reconstruction using autogenous bone, alloplastic or bioactive graft materials, growth factors, and barrier or mesh techniques, to create or rebuild a suitable foundation. Beyond conventional tooth replacement, maxillofacial implants also support prostheses in more complex reconstruction of the facial skeleton. Careful evaluation of occlusion, soft tissue, and neural anatomy underlies planning and helps avoid complications. The field combines surgery, prosthodontics, biomaterials, and imaging, with continuing research into graft materials, bone regeneration, and implant design.
