Overview
Medical devices are instruments, implants, and other articles used to diagnose, prevent, monitor, or treat disease and to support or restore bodily function. In dentistry and oral implantology, medical devices include dental implants and related components used to replace missing teeth, in which artificial roots, often made of titanium, are placed into the jawbone to restore function and improve quality of life. Such devices are designed and manufactured to integrate with the body's tissues, and their use is supported by the success rates and durability that have made implant-based treatment a common option in restorative care. Research relevant to medical devices includes work on why new drugs, treatments, and medical devices need to be tested clinically before they are made available, which addresses the evaluation and safety considerations that apply across device development. Within the dental field, medical devices such as implants are studied for their materials, design, and clinical performance. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to medical devices and their use in dentistry and oral implantology.
