Overview

Oral and dental health is the state of well-being of the teeth, gums, and supporting oral structures, and the practices and care that preserve it. It extends beyond the absence of disease to encompass function, comfort, and oral-health-related quality of life, and it is connected to general health, since oral disease and systemic conditions can influence one another. Maintaining oral health rests on hygiene, prevention, and the timely management of disease, while restorative and rehabilitative care addresses damage and tooth loss. Research in this field includes the assessment of oral-health-related quality of life in populations, periodontal therapy and the inflammatory mediators it modulates, and the analysis of gingival crevicular fluid during orthodontic treatment. It also covers the rehabilitation of missing or compromised dentition through implants and overdentures, bone-grafting and sinus-augmentation procedures that prepare sites for implants, and the diagnosis and management of developmental and pathological conditions of the mouth. Preventive and public-health dimensions, including school-based oral-health programs, situate individual care within community efforts. Sub-areas include preventive dentistry and oral hygiene, periodontal health, implant-based and prosthetic rehabilitation, orthodontics, and the diagnosis of oral disease. By combining prevention, restoration, and the assessment of quality of life, oral and dental health supports both the function of the mouth and the broader well-being of the individual.
