Overview

Oral and dental implants are artificial tooth-root devices, usually made of titanium or titanium alloy, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants restore function and appearance after tooth loss by integrating with surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration, in which living bone bonds directly to the implant surface to provide stable anchorage. Successful treatment depends on adequate bone volume and quality, careful surgical planning often guided by three-dimensional imaging, control of the soft tissues around the implant, and long-term maintenance to prevent peri-implant disease. Where bone is insufficient, procedures such as sinus augmentation, bone grafting, and the use of various graft materials and membranes are employed to rebuild the site before or during implant placement. Research available through the journal addresses implant-supported reconstruction in cases such as the severely atrophic premaxilla and the management of failed two-stage implants, as well as implant-retained mandibular overdentures and the histologic evaluation of osseointegration. Related work examines sinus-lift and augmentation techniques with materials including hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate, the use of cone-beam computed tomography in surgical planning, and the application of mini-implants for orthodontic anchorage, reflecting the surgical, prosthetic, and biomaterial dimensions of implant dentistry.
