Overview

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, interception, and correction of malocclusions and dentofacial irregularities, that is, abnormalities in the alignment of the teeth and in the relationship of the dental arches and jaws. It addresses conditions such as crowding, spacing, increased overjet and overbite, anterior and posterior open bite, crossbite, and skeletal discrepancies including Class II and Class III malocclusion and facial asymmetry. Treatment applies controlled biomechanical forces to move teeth and, where appropriate, to modify growth, using fixed appliances, removable aligners, functional appliances, palatal expanders, and skeletal anchorage from mini-implants that allow tooth movement without reliance on other teeth as anchors. Diagnosis rests on clinical examination together with cephalometric radiographic analysis of antero-posterior and vertical relationships and, increasingly, digital planning. The biological basis of tooth movement involves remodelling of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone in response to applied loads, changes reflected in markers within the gingival crevicular fluid. Complex cases frequently require an interdisciplinary approach, combining orthodontics with orthognathic surgery, restorative procedures, and periodontal management to achieve stable function and aesthetics. By restoring proper occlusion and facial balance, orthodontics contributes to masticatory function, oral health, and the long-term stability of the dentition.
