Overview

Orthodontic implants are small devices, typically titanium screws known as mini-implants or temporary anchorage devices, placed into the jawbone to provide a stable anchor point during orthodontic treatment. They allow orthodontic appliances to apply controlled forces to specific teeth or segments of the dentition, helping to correct alignment, close spaces, and address bite problems with greater precision. Because they offer a fixed point of resistance, orthodontic implants can support tooth movements that are difficult to achieve with conventional anchorage and are often removed once treatment is complete. Research relevant to orthodontic implants includes work on implant anchorage used in orthodontic retrusion, digital planning for mini-implant-supported palatal expanders in the treatment of open bite, and the use of orthodontic mini-implants in closing anterior open bites. These studies examine how implant-based anchorage is applied to achieve specific orthodontic movements and how such treatment is planned and carried out. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to orthodontic implants and the use of skeletal anchorage in orthodontic treatment.
