Overview

Orthodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws, collectively known as malocclusion. Using appliances such as fixed braces, clear aligners, retainers, and, in selected cases, skeletal anchorage devices or surgery, orthodontic treatment moves teeth into more favourable positions and improves the way the upper and lower teeth meet. The goals extend beyond appearance to function and long-term oral health, since well-aligned teeth and a balanced bite are easier to clean and less prone to wear, while correcting problems such as crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite. Treatment planning often relies on clinical examination, dental impressions or scans, and cephalometric analysis to guide the choice and sequence of interventions, which may be coordinated with other dental and surgical specialities for complex cases. Within the scope of Dentistry And Oral Implants, which addresses the structure, health, and rehabilitation of the teeth and supporting tissues, orthodontic treatment is a core clinical discipline. The journal's research relevant to this topic includes studies of gingival crevicular fluid changes during orthodontic treatment, the interdisciplinary management of Class III malocclusion in adults, and cephalometric evaluation in orthodontic patients with facial asymmetries. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to orthodontics and dental care.
