Overview
Tooth extraction is the dental procedure of removing a tooth from its socket in the alveolar bone, performed when a tooth is damaged, decayed, infected, or impacted beyond what can be repaired, or when removal is needed to relieve crowding or pain. It may be a straightforward (simple) extraction or a surgical one, and is typically carried out under local anaesthesia or sedation. In the field of Dentistry And Oral Implants, extraction is closely tied to subsequent restoration, because the condition of the socket and surrounding bone after a tooth is removed shapes the options for replacement. Preserving or augmenting the extraction site, managing the posterior maxilla and maxillary sinus, and timing implant placement are central concerns. Related topics include immediate implant placement, socket preservation, bone grafting and sinus augmentation, and the anatomical risk factors that influence outcomes. This journal publishes research touching on several of these aspects, including the socket shield technique for immediate implants, the use of bioactive graft materials and calcium phosphosilicate putty in augmentation, maxillary sinus lift procedures, anatomical risk factors associated with immediate extraction placement in the posterior maxilla, root resection, and stem-cell approaches relevant to dental tissue.
