Integumentary System
The integumentary system is the largest organ system in the human body. It is composed of the skin, hair, nails, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and associated nerves and muscles, as well as a network of blood vessels and other structures. Its primary roles are to act as a physical and chemical barrier to pathogens and environmental elements, regulate body temperature, and absorb and filter ultraviolet radiation. Its other roles include aiding in the synthesis of Vitamin D, secretion of sweat and sebum, and providing sensory information. It is an important part of the immune system and has important functions in wound healing, metabolism, and vitamin synthesis. Proper functioning of the integumentary system is essential for overall health and wellbeing.
