Chagas Disease
Chagas Disease is a tropical parasitic infection caused by a single-celled protozoan called Trypanosoma cruzi. The disease is generally spread through the bite of an infected insect known as the Triatomine bug. If left untreated, it can cause serious damage to the heart and digestive system, and is potentially fatal. Chagas Disease is primarily found in Latin America and is estimated to affect over 6 million people, with tens of thousands of new cases reported each year. Treatment can be successful if the disease is caught and treated early but there is no vaccine available. Research is ongoing to develop new treatments and methods to reduce the spread of Chagas Disease.
