Esophagus
The esophagus is a tube-like structure located in the upper body, connecting the mouth to the stomach. It plays an essential role in digestion, as it is responsible for transporting food from the mouth to the stomach. The muscular walls of the esophagus contract and relax in a wave-like pattern called peristalsis to ensure that food moves in the correct direction. Additionally, the esophagus produces mucus to help keep food particles from sticking to its walls. Esophageal problems, such as narrowing, blockage, and damage, can cause difficulty with swallowing, pain, and heartburn. Treatments for esophageal disorders include lifestyle changes, medications, and surgeries.
