Peyer s Patches
Peyer's Patches are small aggregations of immune cells, primarily lymphocytes and macrophages, in the lining of the small intestine. They are part of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, which plays an essential role in the immune system. They help to protect the intestines from infection by filtering out and destroying harmful bacteria, viruses, and other substances. In addition, they help to regulate the body’s response to invading microorganisms by releasing immune chemicals. Peyer’s Patches are also involved in a number of other processes, such as the absorption of nutrients, the development of tolerance to harmless antigens, and the regulation of gut homeostasis. Therefore, they are important for maintaining good health and preventing disease.
