Genetic Linkage
Genetic linkage is the phenomenon of related genes being passed together on a single chromosome. The linkage of genes can be used to study complex inheritance patterns, such as those associated with genetic diseases. Genetic linkage can also be used to track the inheritance of beneficial genes, particularly in breeding programs to improve traits in crops or livestock. Linkage studies can be used to map a gene’s location on the chromosome, which can be an important step in ultimately understanding its function. Linkage studies can also be used to understand how genetic variation can lead to differences between individuals or populations.
