Homologous Recombination

Homologous recombination is a genetic process in which strands of DNA from different sources are exchanged between similar or identical molecules. It is essential for the repair of double-stranded breaks in DNA, as well as for DNA-level recombination and rearrangement. Homologous recombination is also responsible for the formation of new genes, an important factor in the development of new species. Furthermore, this process is widely used in genetic engineering, including gene targeting and transgenesis. In gene targeting, a new gene or sequence of interest is inserted into the genome of an organism by homologous recombination. Transgenesis, meanwhile, involves using homologous recombination to introduce new traits into an organism’s genome. Homologous recombination, therefore, is a key genetic process that is of great importance to genome engineering and the development of new species.
