Blastocyst Formation
Blastocyst formation is the process by which a mammal develops from a single cell zygote into the blastocyst, which consists of a collection of cells that will go on to form a fetus. This process is significant as it is the first step in mammalian development and occurs after fertilisation of an egg. It is also a key indicator of implantation potential in assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation. Blastocyst formation is therefore an important process in reproductive biology and is key to understanding the mechanisms of mammalian development.
