Gametogenesis
Gametogenesis is the process of producing gametes (sex cells) in sexually reproducing organisms. It occurs in both sexes and is vital for sexual reproduction. In females, gametes called ova or eggs are produced in the ovaries while in males, gametes called sperm are produced in the testes. During gametogenesis, the germ cells (the cells that will eventually produce the gametes) divide and differentiate to produce sperm and egg cells with half the normal number of chromosomes. This reduces the genetic contribution of the parents to the offspring, ensuring genetic diversity and adaptation of future generations. Gametogenesis is vital for the continuation of the species.
