Catalases
Catalases are enzymes which are found in the cells of organisms and are essential for life. They are responsible for catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. This reaction is important for cells because it helps to prevent the accumulation of reactive oxygen compounds which can damage DNA and other cellular components. Catalases also play a role in metabolic pathways and are essential for the detoxification of certain drugs, alcohol and pollutants. Additionally, they are also used in a variety of biological and industrial processes, such as in the bleaching of wood pulp and the production of hydrogen peroxide for use in the cosmetic and medical industries.
