Eicosanoids are small hormones made from fatty acids found in cell membranes. They are important for cell-signaling and have critical roles in regulating a vast array of biological functions in the body, such as inflammation and blood clotting. They are involved in many biological processes and can have both beneficial and damaging effects depending on their type and concentration. They are clinically used to treat cardiovascular disease, asthma, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments. Understanding the role of eicosanoids has also helped to improve understanding of the roles of fatty acids in health and disease.
