Fermentation

Fermentation is a metabolic process that involves the breakdown of glucose, proteins, and fats for the production of energy in the absence of oxygen. It is an ancient process used in many food industries, from winemaking to baking. In addition to its use in food production, fermentation has been used to produce certain medicines and in bioremediation processes (the use of microorganisms to break down pollution). Through fermentation, different kinds of food products can be produced with different flavors and textures. It is also a sustainable way of food production as it requires significantly fewer resources than other methods.
