Luciferin
Luciferin is a light-emitting chemical which is found in a variety of glow-in-the-dark organisms. It works by combining with oxygen to produce light, which is why it has a wide range of uses in industry and in nature. Luciferin is used in applications such as protein research and bioluminescent research, as it is an effective reporter system to measure biochemical reactions. It is also used in glow-in-the-dark toys and products, illuminating pathways and safety signs, and in some species to attract prey or signal danger.
