Platelet Activation
Platelets are small, anucleated cells in the blood released from the bone marrow which play an important role in the clotting of blood. Platelet activation occurs when platelets are activated by the binding of molecules or other cells, causing the platelets to change shape and become sticky. This is important in the clotting of the blood and helps to repair any damage caused to the blood vessels. Platelet activation is also necessary for the release of substances which are important in the regulation of inflammation and also help promote wound healing. Platelets have a range of potential applications in medicine, including the use of platelet-rich plasma to treat injuries, and to assist in the study of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
