Cancer Stem Cells
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are specialized cells that have the ability to regenerate themselves and the cancerous tissues of which they are a part. CSCs are found in many types of tumors, and are believed to be responsible for the spread and recurrence of cancer. By targeting and destroying these cells, scientists hope to be able to stop the growth and spread of cancer. CSCs are also being investigated for their potential use in developing new treatments for cancer. While therapies have been developed that target the tumor, they do not target the cancer stem cells, which may be the key to successful cures. Therefore, further research into the behavior and function of CSCs is necessary in order to develop more effective treatments for cancer.
