Amniotic Fluid Embolism
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but life-threatening pregnancy complication in which amniotic fluid, fetal cells, or other debris enters a woman’s bloodstream. This can cause shock, respiratory distress, and can even be fatal for both mother and baby. Unfortunately, the exact cause of AFE is unknown and the signs and symptoms can be difficult to diagnose. Treatment is mainly supportive, including administration of fluids and oxygen, and special attention to the mother’s vital signs. With timely diagnosis, however, doctors can often take steps to try to minimize the risk of serious injury or death.
