Ascomycetes
Ascomycetes are a group of fungi, consisting of around 64,000 species, which includes important organisms such as morels, truffles and yeast. They play an essential role in the environment as decomposers, breaking down organic matter and releasing nutrients back into the soil. They also provide us with food and many useful substances, such as antibiotics, enzymes and flavourings. Ascomycetes are also important in many industries, including food production, brewing, winemaking and biotechnology. By studying their biology, researchers are discovering new ways to use Ascomycetes and their products to improve our lives.
