Defensins

Defensins are a type of short, cationic (positively charged) peptides that act as an important part of the human immune system. They play a role in helping to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other harmful pathogens. Defensins are found throughout the body in various tissues, including the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory system. They are able to bind to various microbial surfaces and disrupt cell membranes, leading to the destruction of the microbe. In addition to their antimicrobial activity, defensins also help to regulate the activity of the inflammatory response and enhance the activity of other components of the immune system. Due to their widespread distribution, defensins are important for the maintenance of health and they have been studied as potential therapeutic agents for use in the treatment of various diseases.
