Fungal Classification
Fungi (singular: fungus) are a diverse group of organisms that range from single-celled yeasts to multicellular molds and mushrooms. Fungal classification is the process of organizing fungi into various categories according to their morphological, genetic, and biochemical characteristics. It is an important step for researchers to understand the biology, evolution, and ecology of fungi as well as to obtain knowledge about the potential medical, industrial, and agricultural applications of fungi. Fungal classification is also essential for the development of bioprospecting, which is the search for organisms with useful products such as drugs, enzymes, and biofuels.
