Hypogeous Fungi

Hypogeous fungi are a type of fungi that live and grow underground. These fungi are important to many ecosystems as they help to break down organic material, which is necessary for soil fertility and nutrient cycling. Hypogeous fungi are also edible and are considered a delicacy in many cultures, with China alone having over 1000 species of edible hypogeous fungi. They are also used medicinally to treat certain conditions, including inflammation and tumors. The unique underground habitat of hypogeous fungi also makes them of interest from a conservation standpoint.
