Paracoccidioidomycosis
Paracoccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection caused by the yeast-like fungus Paracoccidioides. It is primarily found in the tropics of Latin America, where it affects millions of people a year. Symptoms of the infection include fever, weight loss, coughing, skin lesions, and swelling of the lymph nodes. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the lungs and cause severe respiratory problems. Treatment typically includes antifungal medications and surgery, depending on the severity of the infection. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a significant public health issue in tropical parts of Latin America, and research is ongoing to better understand the disease and its treatments.
