Pneumocystis

carinii Pneumocystis carinii is a fungus that can cause a type of pneumonia in humans, dogs, cats, and other animals. It is an opportunistic pathogen, meaning it can cause disease in individuals with weak or compromised immune systems. Commonly seen in people with HIV/AIDS or those undergoing immunosuppressive treatments, it can cause severe respiratory illnesses and even death if left untreated. Symptoms include fever, difficulty breathing, and a dry hacking cough. Treatment is typically with antifungals and corticosteroids. Prevention is important, as the fungus can be spread through airborne droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. It is important to practice good hygiene and vaccination in individuals at risk.
