Schizosaccharomyces

pombe Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a unicellular yeast used for many different areas of biological research. It is a member of the genus Schizosaccharomyces that is closely related to the more commonly used brewer’s yeasts. Its significance lies in its rapid growth rate, simple media requirements, and wide range of genetic tools available for study. Additionally, it is used as a model organism to study eukaryotic cell biology, genetics, and other areas of research. Its genome has been completely sequenced which further allows researchers to explore the mechanisms associated with its development. This organism is of great importance, as it can be used to study the fundamentals of life and the pathogenesis of many human diseases.
