Spartina Alterniflora

Spartina alterniflora, more commonly known as smooth cordgrass, is a grass species native to coastal wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. It is an important plant for ecological restoration efforts, used to stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and increase habitat for marsh birds and other animals. Spartina alterniflora is one of the few plants that can tolerate high levels of salinity, making it well-suited for coastal wetlands that experience drastic changes in water levels due to tides and storms. The dense, deep root system of Spartina alterniflora also improves water quality by filtering out pollutants. This is especially useful in estuaries and other areas close to heavily populated areas.
