Autosomal Recessive Traits

Autosomal recessive traits are those that are passed through generations of a family where two copies of the same gene (one from each parent) must be present for it to manifest in the offspring. When an individual possesses only one copy of the gene, they are said to be a carrier, meaning they have no outwardly visible signs of the trait, but they can pass it on to their children. By understanding autosomal recessive traits, geneticists can use this knowledge to predict the likelihood of offspring inheriting a trait and to aid in developing treatments for genetic diseases. Additionally, this understanding can be used to track the genealogy of families and to study the genetic ancestry of a population.
