Caenorhabditis
elegans Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living soil-dwelling roundworm with a transparent body that is just 1 millimeter long. It has been used extensively as a model organism in biomedical research and has many characteristics that make it an ideal organism for the study of genetics and development. C. elegans has an easy-to-follow life cycle, with its short lifespan and simple genetics. This has been extremely useful in uncovering important genetic mechanisms, providing insight into human development, aging, and diseases such as cancer. C. elegans has also been used to study how organisms adapt to environmental stressors like changes in temperature or pH. This research has important implications for our understanding of the causes and treatments of human diseases.
