Channelopathies
Channelopathies are diseases that affect the ion channels in cells. These ion channels are responsible for the passage of ions in and out of cells, controlling their function. Abnormalities in these channels can cause disruptions in the normal functioning of the cells, tissues, and organs leading to a range of diseases. Channelopathies can affect a number of different body systems including the nervous system, cardiac system, and endocrine system. The symptoms of channelopathies vary depending on the affected system, but some of the more common symptoms include seizures, irritability, muscle cramps, and cardiac arrhythmias. Diagnosis and treatment of channelopathies involve genetic testing and targeted drug therapies. Researchers are continuing to investigate these diseases in hopes of finding more effective treatments.
