Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe and progressive muscle disease that affects mostly males. It is caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene located on the X chromosome, leading to the gradual deterioration of muscles and eventually, death. DMD is characterized by muscle weakness, which starts in the lower body and spreads to the arms, neck and other areas. Symptoms include difficulty walking, climbing stairs, changes in posture and breathing problems. Treatment is largely focused on managing symptoms, and there is no cure for DMD. Research is ongoing to improve the quality of life of those afflicted and to find a cure.
