Fitness Epistasis

Fitness epistasis is a phenomenon in which the effect of one gene on the fitness of an organism is modified due to interaction with other genes. The interaction between genes can affect an organism’s overall fitness and is critical to the evolution of species. Fitness epistasis can influence the development of an organism, its ability to adapt to the environment and its capacity to transmit genetic information to its offspring. By understanding fitness epistasis, scientists can gain insights into the rise of new species and the evolution of complex traits. It can also provide valuable information for genetic counselors, helping them better understand the risks associated with particular genetic combinations.
