Gene Transfer
Gene transfer is a process by which genetic material is transferred from one organism (donor) to another organism (recipient). It is a form of genetic engineering with significant implications for medical and industrial applications, as it enables the manipulation of genes for therapeutic, agricultural and industrial purposes. For example, gene transfer has enabled the development of gene therapy to provide new treatments for diseases and disorders, and of genetically modified plants and animals to improve their productivity. Gene transfer can also be used to modify micro-organisms for bioremediation and to create novel enzymes and other industrial products. The ability to transfer genes provides exciting research and application opportunities in fields such as biotechnology, synthetic biology and nanobiotechnology.
