Heterosis
Heterosis is a phenomenon that occurs when the combination of two parent plants or animals produces offspring that are more robust and vigorous than either parent. This phenomenon, also known as hybrid vigor, has been observed for centuries in agriculture and animal husbandry, with farmers and breeders leveraging it to increase the overall quality of their crops and livestock. Heterosis can be used to increase the yields of crops, increase the strength and size of animals, and improve disease resistance. It has also been utilized to reduce the amount of resources required for production, such as water, land, and inputs like fertilizers. Through heterosis, the efficiency of food production systems can be increased, leading to greater sustainability and resilience.
