Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international research effort to sequence and map all of the genes in the human genome - the genetic material present in a human cell. The project was launched in 1990 and took 13 years to complete. Its goal was to provide an invaluable resource for identifying the genetic basis of health and disease, and to develop new strategies for prevention and treatment of genetic diseases. The project has enabled the development of new diagnostic tests, personalized treatments, and has been invaluable for furthering our understanding of the genetic basis of human biology. The results of this project have also been beneficial for other species, both living and extinct, as it has allowed us to compare the genetic make-up of humans to other species. The HGP remains one of the most successful and important scientific projects of our time, and its applications are still being discovered.
