Kinetoplastids

Kinetoplastids are a group of single-celled, parasitic organisms, which are distinguished by the presence of an organelle known as the kinetoplast that contains a single giant DNA molecule. These parasites are significant due to their ability to cause diseases such as sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, and leishmaniasis in humans, as well as livestock diseases. In addition, they are increasingly being studied for their potential to produce novel drugs, biopesticides, and other compounds of medical and agricultural interest.
