Lac Operon
The Lac operon is a set of structural and regulatory genes found in bacteria which are involved in the utilization of lactose as a carbon and energy source. When lactose is present, the operon is active, allowing the bacteria to metabolize and use the lactose. In the absence of lactose, the Lac operon is inactive, and the bacteria cannot utilize lactose. The Lac operon is an important model for the study of gene regulation, as it was the first operon to be discovered and described, making it an important landmark in the development of molecular biology. It is also of practical importance for researchers, as it is used as a tool for gene expression and manipulation in organisms such as bacteria.
