Patau Syndrome
Patau Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by an extra copy of chromosome 13. It is also known as trisomy 13. Its features include mental and physical developmental delays, decreased muscle tone, cleft palate, cardiac abnormalities, low-set ears, low birth weight, and seizures. Patau Syndrome is one of the most severe and fatal chromosomal disorders, with most infants dying within the first year of life. Treatment focuses on addressing individual physical and intellectual abnormalities and providing supportive care. Early intervention and special education programs can help to improve the quality of life for those living with Patau Syndrome.
