Plant Genomics
Plant genomics is the study of genetic material and its function in plants. Understanding the genetic makeup of plants can assist in developing improved varieties of crops and other plants. Plant genomics research incorporates modern methods of gene analysis and the evaluation of plants’ genomic sequences to identify disease resistance, drought tolerance, and other desired traits. Research in plant genomics contributes to increased yields, modification of nutritional content for more nutritious crops, and development of other improvements in agriculture. It also provides insights into the evolutionary history and development of plants. As such, it is a key area of study for the future of food security and sustainability.
