Protamines
Protamines are small, basic proteins mostly found in the sperm of different species of fish and some types of reptiles. They are important for the stabilization of sperm cells as they form compact chromatin packages in order to protect the DNA from damage. They are also involved in water balance and ion transport in the sperm, making them essential for sperm motility and fertilization. Protamines have several uses in the medical field, including in the examination of male fertility, the production of recombinant proteins and the development of gene therapy strategies. Besides that, they are also used in biotechnology, food science and drug delivery systems.
