Totipotency

Totipotency is the ability of a single cell to develop into any type of cell in the body. It is significant because it explains how a single cell, the zygote, is able to form an entire organism with many differently specialized cells. Totipotency has been used in a variety of ways, including in tissue engineering, manipulating gene expression, and in cloning. Scientists are also researching its potential applications in regenerative medicine, in which totipotent cells can be used to form new tissue for the repair of organs or the replacement of cells damaged by disease or injury.
