Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which can impact a person’s health in various ways, including increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, kidney damage, vision problems and lower limb amputations. It is caused by a deficiency of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels, or by a resistance to the action of insulin. It affects millions of people worldwide, with some estimates suggesting that more than 400 million people have been diagnosed with it. Proper management of diabetes mellitus includes lifestyle modifications, such as exercise, healthy eating and weight control, as well as medications to control blood sugar levels. With diligent management, people with diabetes can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
