Disaccharides

Disaccharides are carbohydrates composed of two simple sugars joined together. They are the simplest form of polysaccharides and are the most abundant carbohydrates in the human diet. Examples of disaccharides include sucrose (table sugar), maltose, lactose (milk sugar) and cellobiose. Disaccharides are important for energy production, digestion and absorption of other nutrients, and providing structure and bulk to food. They also play a role in many metabolic processes, including glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Disaccharides are found in a variety of natural food sources, such as dairy, fruits, and grains, and can also be produced synthetically.
